A new mobile NMR scanner was designed with a Halbach magnet for measurements of porosity and pore size distributions of water-saturated cylindrical geological drilled cores [1]. The device is light–weight    (< 8 kg) (Fig. 1a). Different types of rf coils were designed for non-destructive analysis of cylindrical and cylindrical cores split along their axis with different diameters up to 60 mm and lengths of up 1,5 m.

1H NMR transverse relaxation measurements with the CPMG sequence are used for porosity determination. Rocks with porosities of less than 5 % can readily be investigated without problems. Combined with a mobile NMR spectrometer and special software for porosity and pore size distributions measurements the Halbach scanner is particularly attractive for use on research vessels and logging platforms because it is mobile and light (Fig. 1b).
